Raksha Bandhan is also known as “Raksha Sutra” in some part of India.

In times of mughal empire, there was a war going between mughals and rajput where mughal king humayun marched towards Chitod . In Dwapar Yuga, Lord Krishna killed shishupal by his Sudarshan Chakra. After removing his head when Sudarshan Chakra came back to Lord Krishna this has cut his finger and it’s started bleeding. At this time, queen of pandava “Draupadi” taken a piece of her saree and put it on Lord Krishna's finger and it’s stopped bleeding. After seeing this Lord Krishna became emotional and given a promise to Draupadi to always protect her. Later, in order to keep his promise Lord Krishna saved Draupadi from Cheer Haran by Dushasan (younger brother of Duryodhan). This was an purnima of Shravan Month.

In ancient times, there was a war between demi gods and demons which lasted for 12 years in which demigods lost. Sad kind Indra came and asked help from guru brihaspati. At this time his wife was listening this conversation and suggested that tomorrow is Sukal Purnima and she can prepare raksha sutra which indra can ask bramans to put it on his wrist. This will protect him and his victory would be guaranteed. Next day king indra ask guru brihaspati to put this raksha sutra on his wrist and went for war with demons and became victorious.

Since then that day there is a tradition to get rakhi tied by brahmin. This was also a purnima of shravan month.
